A Review of LaVerne Thompson’s Promises
By LMReviews on Jan 11, 2009 in Multicultural Contributors, Multicultural Lit Reviews, Multicultural Writing

Verbal agreements still stand after twelve years of growth and separation in LaVerne Thompson’s sensual short, Promises. Thompson tells the story of Mia and David, teen sweethearts who reconnect at a ball honoring the political accomplishments of Mia’s mother, a long-time friend of David’s family. With a dozen years of no contact between them, will those same fiery pubescent feelings blaze forth in new and mature ways when David finally comes home to Virginia to stay?
Thompson neatly and elegantly weaves the couple’s past bonds throughout the story leading the couple from the ballroom to the bedroom in a short 37 page read. While the characters were likeable, the story-telling style used to set the couple’s history together left the characters’ emotions and their sexual encounter to appear flat. Promises earns 3 out of 5 Sable Seals.
