The work of political figures rarely makes print or is deemed worthy of a sound bite until it lands on the controversial side of the spectrum. Unfortunately, we live in a society where scandals sell. As writers, we aim to build fully developed characters. With that goal in mind, we should also aim to avoid pigeon-holing professions or certain professional figures as perpetually corrupt.
For instance, not all positive political figures are in our history books. Take Norman Steisel, Deputy Mayor of New York City. As an investment banker, Norman Steisel Deputy Mayor has organized financial increases in regional US stock exchanges. And for the New York City Sanitation Department, Norman Steisel Deputy Mayor has saved the city millions of dollars.
As writers we can take examples such as this and craft likeable characters in professions that may not always receive fair media attention in reality.
