Halloween Horrific Reads!

Happy Halloween!

Originating some 2000 years ago, the Celts from what is now present day Ireland, the UK and northern France began the Halloween tradition of marking the end of the summer’s harvest and acknowledging the often cold dreary winter ahead. Taking place during a time of year that is often associated with death, the Celts believed that the night before a new year, the barriers between the living and the dead became less clearly defined.  The day that we know as Halloween is also acknowledged as the day that ghosts of the dead return to the earth. Due to the spiritual activity on the day, many thought the predictions of Druid and Celtic priests were more easily attained.

In commemoration of the event bonfires were set for protection, Roman festivals were launched in celebration and observance of some Roman gods.

As death took on a more mysterious and scary tone the celebration of Halloween did as well. Now the costumes are scarier and superstitions run rampant.

Although Halloween customs vary around the world, here at Sable Lit Reviews, we just like the opportunity to be someone or something else for the day…whichever the case might be. And of course, we relish the opportunity to bring you some thoroughly spooky reads!
