Going Home Again?

We often don’t get the chance to revisit a period of our former life.  I’m temp-working for a previous employer while I freelance. I worked for this company more than eight years ago. Now that it’s so many years later, I wonder why I am back even if it is only on a temporary basis.

It’s a good experience although I feel a little like George Bailey from It’s A Wonderful Life, because I am able to go back and see all the things that progressed in that work environment in my absence. Some things and some people haven’t changed and some people and some things have changed quite a bit. Most important is that I’ve changed. I’m able to see the value in the work environment and the things that are less valuable.

Just like the Ying and the Yang, both must be present. Now I have a chance to respond to things differently or at the very least see things from a different perspective.  I also get to relive the work culture.  I can now identify similar experiences from eight years ago and that still exists today and I recognize it as the culture of the company. Certain companies attract a specific personality in much the same way people attract others with a certain personality. Keep this in mind when you are writing about company environments and the people that work in them. If given the chance, would you or your characters go home again?
