Culture in Nonfiction: Paul Offit

Welcome back!
Generally in multicultural writing, the focus is based on some form of fiction or nonfiction figure. However, multicultural nonfiction touches more than geography guides and biographies. Culture is not exclusive to race and ethnicity. It also exists among a group of people with a common interest or belief. There’s no argument that cultural differences exist among religions, yet, a person can change his or her religious stance. As a result, multiculturalism can be as permanent as race or as impermanent as one’s political or religious persuasion.
In the post Details of Writing II, I talk about how researching advocates like Dr. Paul Offit helps create characters with a platform and built-in conflict for fiction. Philadelphia Pediatrician and prominent vaccine expert Paul Offit recently released his book on the lack of a connection between vaccines and autism titled Vaccinated. Paul Offit’s nonfiction and his expertise speak to the members of our culture who are concerned with child vaccines and regardless of what side of the argument those members stand.
